  • Constitutional Convention Talk

Been posting on Reddit about the need for a constitutional convention, and the karma is rolling in. I got my first award for it, in fact.

People are ready for this. It’s become an obvious fact that the current system is untenable, on practically every front the government has failed.

The senate allows Wyoming and North Dakota to cancel out the combined populations of California and New York.

The house is completely gerrymandered, a process which allows a 74% majority to receive minority representation.

The electoral college means we don’t actually count votes for president. Instead, we limit voter power so much only a handful if swing state special interests matter.

The president can unilaterally declare war, and is so shielded by power they can rape children and get away with it.

The supreme court, whose constitutionally defined powers are “they exist”, can create constitutional-level laws that cannot be overturned, making a mockery of the concept of democracy anyway.

There are no mechanisms for the people to propose laws. There are no recall procedures. There are no requirements for elected representatives represent their voters. There are no requirements, and there are no consequences.

We need fundamental reforms. There are no other options. There are too many systems that are just broken, with no accountability, no consequences, and no plan for repair.

At this point I consider it a denial of reality to argue that we can elect Democrats and somehow this will all work out. Right now, they are less popular than Trump, and it is because they are a problem masquerading as a solution. We must reconsider the fundamental structure of our representation, or we will will fail as a country. The shame of our failure will echo throughout the rest of human history, as the ones who set the planet on fire and did nothing to hold those responsible.
